I have recently discovered how much I love making things. Ladies, power tools aren’t just toys for the men; they are for us too!
I decided to start with a small project for my first one using only scrap wood.
I have a pile of old picket fence pieces and some other lumber in my yard, so I went and got a couple boards out.
I came inside to measure and cut three 14 inch pieces and two 5 3/8 pieces.
The three 14 inch pieces became the bottom and long sides of the tray.
The two 5 3/8 pieces became the two short sides.
After cutting them, I used my 16 gauge nail gun with 2 inch nails to put it together.
Next, I sanded it.
I ran my hand across the wood to make sure it was as smooth as I wanted it to be, and then I took it inside to move on to the next step in the project: painting.
I have Fusion Mineral Paints that I use for my projects like this. I chose the Goddess Ashwaganda color and topped it off with a brown antiquing glaze that was also by them.
I rip open plastic sacks from the grocery store or Walmart to use underneath projects like this to keep paint off of other surfaces.
After I painted it, I let it dry.
The last thing to do was to put it on top of the toilet. I think I like it! It is not perfect, and I may try staining before painting next time and then sanding a bit where the stain shows through, but I like the way it turned out for a first attempt.
You can measure your toilet to see how large of a tray you can make so that you can customize yours.
I also may eventually put some words on the front.
All in all, not too bad of a project that I made with no cost because I already had all of the materials.
If you make one, be sure and post it in your stories and tag me @fixerupperfarmhouse.
